This is a short story about a very special woman. She was an exceptional employee and friend of the Force. She was very, very proud to be associated with the RCMP and she considered other members of the Force as her second family. She is now missed by two families; her children and the RCMP. Her daughter, Ms Joan Terris helped me to piece this story together about their Mom.

Voici une brève histoire sur une femme très spéciale. Elle était une employée exceptionnelle et une amie de la Force. Elle était très, très fière d’être associée à la GRC et elle considérait les autres membres de la Force comme sa deuxième famille. Elle est maintenant regrettée par deux familles ; ses enfants et la GRC. Sa fille, Mme Joan Terris, m’a aidé à reconstituer cette histoire sur leur maman.

But, first this. As police officers, I think we ought to take time to occasionally reflect on all RCMP employees and the work which they do in support of members in the field. It’s well known that the Force would come to a complete stall without the help of our generous Civilian Members, Public Servant and all employees performing a wide host of various jobs.

En tant qu’agents de police, je pense que nous devrions prendre le temps de réfléchir occasionnellement à tous les employés de la GRC et au travail qu’ils font pour soutenir les membres sur le terrain. The Force must confess that it is very fortunate to have dedicated employees such as our ‘Mother of the Month.’ Most members of the Force come and go. Our Civilian Members and Public Servants provide stability at the work scene. Upon arriving at a new posting, it was my experience to make friends early with our CM’s and PS’s.

La Force doit avouer qu’elle a beaucoup de chance d’avoir des employés dévoués comme notre « Mère du mois. » La plupart des membres de la Force vont et viennent. Nos membres civils et fonctionnaires assurent la stabilité sur le lieu de travail. En arrivant à une nouvelle affectation, j’ai eu l’expérience de me lier d’amitié tôt avec nos MC et FP.

Very often, they become the history of Detachment routine especially at times when new members and NCO’s rotate in and out. In short, the Force must truly value the work, expertise, technical skills and education which our Civilian Members bring to law enforcement. Let’s show them our appreciation and say ‘thanks’ to them more frequently.

Très souvent, ils deviennent l’histoire de la routine du détachement, surtout lorsque de nouveaux membres et sous-officiers se succèdent. En bref, la Force doit vraiment valoriser le travail, l’expertise, les compétences techniques et la formation que nos membres civils apportent aux forces de l’ordre. Montrons-leur notre appréciation et disons-leur « merci » plus fréquemment.

Our ‘Mother of the Month’ is Civilian Member Elsie Margaret Edward-Nesbitt.

Joan (Elsie’s daughter) begins by reflecting on her Mother’s obituary; Joan said: ‘Our family was sad to announce the passing of Elsie Margaret Edwards Nesbitt, nee Forten, on Friday, February 18, 2011. Now, months later, Mom’s loss continues to be felt by each of us.

Mom was born on January 11, 1922. She was predeceased by her parents Wilfred and Gertrude (Maugham) Forten. She was also predeceased by husbands Charles Martin Edwards and Duncan Nesbitt. test

Mom left behind a closely knitted family. I am Mom’s daughter (Joan Edwards Terris (Doug Werbin) and I have one brother Bruce Edwards. Mom loved and cherished her grandchildren; James (Jing) and Jennifer Terris, Scott Jackson (Lia), Charles and Alexandre Edwards. As well, Mom also loved her great-grandchildren; Justin, Victoria and Bianca Terris, and Erin and Paige Jackson. Beloved sister of Dorothy Mallory, Rita Kittle (Mac), William Forten and Robert Forten.

Maman a laissé derrière elle une famille soudée. Je suis la fille de maman (Joan Edwards Terris (Doug Werbin) et j’ai un frère Bruce Edwards. Maman aimait et chérissait ses petits-enfants ; James (Jing) et Jennifer Terris, Scott Jackson (Lia), Charles et Alexandre Edwards. My Mother was predeceased by her sister Helen Asselin and her brother Archibald Paul Forten. She was step-mother of Carole, Janet, Debbie, Jane and the late John Nesbitt and an aunt and great-aunt to many nieces and nephews.

Ma mère a été prédécédée par sa sœur Helen Asselin et son frère Archibald Paul Forten. Elle était belle-mère de Carole, Janet, Debbie, Jane et feu John Nesbitt et tante et grand-tante de nombreux nièces et neveux.

Our Mother was raised during the depression years. Like many others, she had to struggle for work and finances. She had to move to Ottawa from Brockville and she was hired to work for the Department of National Defence. It was her first job. It was 1940. She ended her working career as a Civilian Member of the RCMP.

Notre mère a été élevée pendant les années de dépression. Comme beaucoup d’autres, elle a dû lutter pour trouver du travail et des finances. Elle a dû déménager à Ottawa depuis Brockville et elle a été embauchée pour travailler au ministère de la Défense nationale. C’était son premier emploi. C’était en 1940. Elle a terminé sa carrière professionnelle comme membre civile de la GRC.

Mom was known to be a very shy person. That said, she was fiercely independent. I guess she had to be with a young family. Today, she is remembered as having a keen sense of humour and a wide reputation as the most wonderful cook.

Maman était connue pour être une personne très timide. Cela dit, elle était farouchement indépendante. Je suppose qu’elle devait l’être avec une jeune famille. Aujourd’hui, elle est rappelée pour son vif sens de l’humour et une large réputation comme la cuisinière la plus merveilleuse.

She also had lots of talents. I think she learned these skills as a young woman. She was a baker and an excellent seamstress. She was in heaven while making many imaginative clothes, capes and costumes for her children and grandchildren. Her family was in her heart. All the children were in her soul. They also will miss Mom.

Elle avait aussi beaucoup de talents. Je pense qu’elle a appris ces compétences étant jeune femme. Elle était boulangère et excellente couturière. Elle était aux anges en confectionnant de nombreux vêtements imaginatifs, capes et costumes pour ses enfants et petits-enfants. Sa famille était dans son cœur. Tous les enfants étaient dans son âme. Eux aussi manqueront de maman.

Mom was a widow in her mid-40s when her husband Chuck died. Later, she married Duncan. They retired to Perth. They had a vacation home at Wolfe Lake near Westport, Ontario. They often reminded us of the many, many happy times at the lake and their vacation home surrounded by the family.

Maman était veuve dans la mi-quarantaine quand son mari Chuck est décédé. Plus tard, elle a épousé Duncan. Ils ont pris leur retraite à Perth. Ils avaient une maison de vacances au lac Wolfe près de Westport, Ontario. Ils nous rappelaient souvent les nombreux, nombreux moments heureux au lac et dans leur maison de vacances entourés de la famille.

We were very blessed to have her as our Mother. We also have many, many people to thank for caring for her. We want to thank the Staff of the 3rd floor at Garden Terrace Home, Kanata for all of the gentle and compassionate care which was given to Mom.

Nous avons eu beaucoup de chance de l’avoir comme notre mère. Nous avons aussi beaucoup, beaucoup de gens à remercier de s’être occupés d’elle. Nous voulons remercier le personnel du 3e étage du Garden Terrace Home, Kanata pour tous les soins doux et compatissants qui ont été prodigués à maman.

All her friends attended her Memorial Service last February. It was a very sad and emotional farewell.

Tous ses amis ont assisté à son service commémoratif en février dernier. Ce fut un adieu très triste et émouvant.

All I can say to her is this: ‘Thank you for all the memories, Mom; we love you and will never forget you.’!

Tout ce que je peux lui dire, c’est ceci : « Merci pour tous les souvenirs, maman ; nous t’aimons et ne t’oublierons jamais. » !

Let’s Not Say Good Bye, Wish Me Farewell. For I will see you again.

Dear Joan;

In a way, I’ve got to know and admire Elsie Margaret Edwards-Nesbitt. I get the impression that she gave a good portion of her life to the Federal Service and the RCMP. I would also guess that she was a grandmother to the ‘rough, crusty and brisk’ ‘ole Staff Sergeants in her office. The Force will also miss Elsie Margaret Edwards-Nesbitt.

D’une certaine manière, j’en suis venu à connaître et à admirer Elsie Margaret Edwards-Nesbitt. J’ai l’impression qu’elle a consacré une bonne partie de sa vie au service fédéral et à la GRC. Je suppose aussi qu’elle était une grand-mère pour les « vieux sergents d’état-major rugueux, crôuteux et vifs » de son bureau. La Force regrettera également Elsie Margaret Edwards-Nesbitt.
