My father was Edwin Jeffery Bowen. He emigrated to Canada in 1957 bringing his wife — Nellie Rosa (nee: Morris) and (us) their 3 sons; Brian E. (14), David E. (10) and Douglas G. (7 years). We settled in Winnipeg Manitoba. Shortly after arriving in Winnipeg, Dad secured employment with the R.C.M. Police as a Special Constable. He was posted as a Bank Guard in the Bank of Canada at Portage and Main — a post which he occupied until his retirement in 1973.

Mon père était Edwin Jeffery Bowen. Il a immigré au Canada en 1957 en amenant sa femme — Nellie Rosa (née : Morris) et (nous) leurs 3 fils ; Brian E. (14 ans), David E. (10 ans) et Douglas G. (7 ans). Nous nous sommes installés à Winnipeg, Manitoba. Peu après notre arrivée à Winnipeg, papa a obtenu un emploi auprès de la Police montale royale du Canada en tant que gendarme spécial. Il a été affecté comme garde de banque à la Banque du Canada à Portage et Main — un poste qu’il a occupé jusqu’à sa retraite en 1973.

In earlier years, Dad was single while a member of the British Merchant Navy. Thus, he had spent considerable time visiting and working in Canada. He lived in Vancouver. He worked in the forest skidding logs for the pulp mill in Port Alberni, he was a cowboy on the Gang Ranch in the Merritt area and he worked on the docks in New Westminster.

Dans ses jeunes années, papa était célibataire lorsqu’il était membre de la marine marchande britannique. Ainsi, il avait passé un temps considérable à visiter et à travailler au Canada. Il a vécu à Vancouver. Il a travaillé en forêt à débusquer des grumes pour la papeterie de Port Alberni, il a été cow-boy au Gang Ranch dans la région de Merritt et il a travaillé sur les quais de New Westminster.

I recall him telling me stories. One tale was of him walking across the Lions Gate Bridge between Vancouver and today’s North Vancouver. In those days, the area was an Aboriginal Reserve and it eventually became the ‘British Properties.’ He also remembered partying in the Vancouver Hotel shortly after it opened to serve the public. At that time, he said that he lived in a boarding house on Cambie Street on the site of the present day BC Football Stadium.

Je me souviens qu’il me racontait des histoires. L’une d’elles était de lui traversant le pont Lions Gate entre Vancouver et l’actuel North Vancouver. À cette époque, la zone était une réserve autochtone et elle est finalement devenue les ‘British Properties.’ Il se souvenait également de fêtes à l’Hôtel Vancouver peu après son ouverture au public. À ce moment-là, il a dit qu’il vivait dans une pension de famille sur la rue Cambie sur le site du stade de football de la Colombie-Britannique d’aujourd’hui.

He returned to England because of WWII was approaching. He planned on seeking a Commission in the British Royal Navy. However, prior to the opening hostilities of WWII, he was involved in a near fatal motorcycle accident that left him crippled with both legs badly deformed. This incident played a large role in him not serving in WWII. At the same time, he was seeking a better opportunity for his 3 sons when he decided to leave his native land.

Il est rentré en Angleterre parce que la WWII approchait. Il avait l’intention de chercher une commission dans la Marine royale britannique. Cependant, avant les hostilités débutantes de la WWII, il a été impliqué dans un accident de moto presque fatal qui l’a laissé handicapé avec les deux jambes gravement déformées. Cet incident a joué un grand rôle dans le fait qu’il n’a pas servi dans la WWII. En même temps, il cherchait une meilleure opportunité pour ses 3 fils lorsqu’il a décidé de quitter sa terre natale.

Dad was openly proud of his service in the Force and he was forever grateful for the chance to serve his new found country, Canada. He became a Canadian citizen, and I recall what he said just prior to leaving the British Isles. He asked me ‘...what do you think son ... if we go, we aren’t coming back you know?’

Papa était ouvertement fier de son service dans la Force et il était éternellement reconnaissant pour la chance de servir son nouveau pays, le Canada. Il est devenu citoyen canadien, et je me souviens de ce qu’il a dit juste avant de quitter les Îles britanniques. Il m’a demandé « ...qu’est-ce que tu en penses, fils ... si on y va, on ne revient pas, tu sais ? »

He often compared the two countries, but he never regretted his decision to come to Canada. He left the UK with $500.00 in his pocket and with the help of some cousins whom they never met, he and his wife established a foothold in this new land. He was 41 years old when he decided to make this huge move, having sold everything in England just to pay for the boat fare and train travel.

Il comparait souvent les deux pays, mais il n’a jamais regretté sa décision de venir au Canada. Il a quitté le Royaume-Uni avec 500,00 $ dans sa poche et avec l’aide de quelques cousins qu’ils n’avaient jamais rencontrés, lui et sa femme ont établi une tête de pont dans ce nouveau pays. Il avait 41 ans lorsqu’il a décidé de faire ce grand déplacement, ayant tout vendu en Angleterre juste pour payer le billet de bateau et le voyage en train.

We sailed from Liverpool on the R.M.S. Sythia of the 18-APR-57 arriving in New York city 10 days later. The voyage was delayed by 4 days because of icebergs in the north Atlantic. We boarded a train in New York and entered Canada, changing trains in Toronto and traveling to Winnipeg. We arrived at the CPR Station on North Main Street on the 02-MAY-57 where we were met by my mother’s 2nd cousins — Gordon and June Walker. They drove us to their home on Fawcett Avenue in their 1951 Chevrolet.

Nous avons navigué depuis Liverpool sur le R.M.S. Sythia le 18-AVR-57, arrivant à New York 10 jours plus tard. Le voyage a été retardé de 4 jours à cause des icebergs dans l’Atlantique Nord. Nous avons pris un train à New York et sommes entrés au Canada, changeant de train à Toronto et voyageant vers Winnipeg. Nous sommes arrivés à la gare du CPR sur la rue North Main le 02-MAI-57 où nous avons été accueillis par les cousins au deuxième degré de ma mère — Gordon et June Walker. Ils nous ont conduits à leur maison sur l’avenue Fawcett dans leur Chevrolet 1951.

They accommodated us for 2 weeks, long enough to find an apartment and start school etc. Each of us boys graduated from Daniel McIntyre Collegiate Institute. We 3 boys each married, and collectively we had 8 children. Brian married Norma MacPherson, (formerly of PEI) and they had 3 children — Bradley, Brent, Jana. David married Angie and had 3 children — Shannon and a twin — the later died at birth and Shawn. Douglas married Beverley Schick and gave birth to Tracey and Jefferey. As the years rolled by, Dad’s grandchildren have 8 great grandchildren.

Ils nous ont hébergés pendant 2 semaines, le temps de trouver un appartement et de commencer l’école, etc. Chacun de nous, les garçons, a obtenu son diplôme de l’Institut collégial Daniel McIntyre. Nous, les 3 garçons, nous sommes chacun mariés, et collectivement nous avons eu 8 enfants. Brian a épousé Norma MacPherson, (anciennement de l’Île-du-Prince-Édouard) et ils ont eu 3 enfants — Bradley, Brent, Jana. David a épousé Angie et a eu 3 enfants — Shannon et un jumeau — ce dernier est mort à la naissance, et Shawn. Douglas a épousé Beverley Schick et a donné naissance à Tracey et Jefferey. Au fil des ans, les petits-enfants de papa ont 8 arrière-petits-enfants.

His desire was to return to BC to retire, however, he settled for Edmonton, AB where he spent his last days living with his wife and his son — David.

Son désir était de retourner en Colombie-Britannique pour prendre sa retraite, cependant, il s’est installé à Edmonton, AB où il a passé ses derniers jours à vivre avec sa femme et son fils — David.

It’s all due to our father, Edwin Jefferey Bowen, that the Bowen family is firmly established in Canada today!
